Aromatherapy

What is aromatherapy exactly?

According to this dictionary, it means the following:

massage of the body and especially of the face with a preparation of fragrant essential oils extracted from herbs, flowers, and fruits;
broadly :  the use of aroma to enhance a feeling of well-being

So it is actually the art of healing with essential oils (which are basically purified extracts from plants).

How can you use essential oils?

There are several ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy. You can use the oils for massages, to inhalate (don’t do this with pure essential oils! It can be dangerous!!!), as an air freshener or you can use essential oils in your (homemade) beauty products. You can add them to your shampoo, soap or even to your favourite lotion.

Not only essential oils are part of aromatherapy, also incense, potpourri, inhaling steam, scented candles and fresh flowers are part of aromatherapy.

So how does this work?

This depends, of course, on how you use the oils/incense/etc. When you warm up the oils or when you burn insence, the oils evaporate so that the healing molecules can be easily inhaled. When you use the oils during your massage or in your beauty products, the oils are brought in direct contact with your skin and are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

What do you think about aromatherapy? Do you believe in the healing powers of the use of aromatherapy? In one of my next posts, I will tell you something about the different oils and give you some recipes to try as well.

For now: I bid thee farewell. Until next time!
